French Cathedral (Berlin)

Germany / Berlin / Berlin / Gendarmenmarkt, 1
 museum, listed building / architectural heritage, 1700s construction (1700 - 1709)

The "French Cathedral", not itself a church, ws constructed in 1784 beside the French Friedrichstadt Church (built in 1705). The whole complex is often called the French "Dom", which in German would mean "cathedral", though in fact it comes from the French word "dome" meaning "cupola". Built on the French churchyard at the order of Friedrich II for decorative purposes, together with the "German Dom" opposite, the tower was put to the free disposition of the French Church for all time to come. Today it is the property of the district Mitte, with the French Church as main tenant. The viewing platform and a carillon were added in 1987. The tower also contains the Huguenot Museum, an assambly hall and other institutions of the French Church.
