The Lower West Side of the Port of Saint John contains several derelict facilities and vacant land as well as a tank farm operated by Crosby Molasses.
Tank Farm
Crosby Molasses moved to Saint John in 1897 and continues to operate from its plant at 327 Rothesay Avenue. The tank farm stores molasses, which is derived from sugar cane, imported from the West Indies and off loaded from ships docked at Pier 12 where it is moved by pipeline to the tank farm. In 2010, over 8,800 metric tonnes of molasses were delivered.
In addition to molasses, the tank farm is used to store other materials including fish oil and calcium chloride. In 2010, over 20,000 metric tonnes of fish oil were received.
