The Amalgamated Town of Placentia (1991), containing the former towns of Placentia, Jerseyside, Fershwater, and Dunville, as well as the former (American) Argentia Naval Base. Officially founded in 1662 as the French capital of Newfoundland, Placentia has been the primary population and service centre for the Southwest Avalon and Placentia Bay for more than three centuries.
