Constructed in 1848 and originally known as the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, the Provincial Hospital served as New Brunswick's only hospital for the treatment of patient's with mental health problems until 1954 when a second facility was opened in Campbellton. Expanded over the years and renamed Centracare, the hospital remained open until 1998, when Centracare opened a new facility in South Bay.
In 1999, the property was acquired by JD Irving Limited which tore down the hospital buildings and converted the site into a privately owned but publicly accessible park.
