"Fort Hill" started out as a residence designed c. 1878 by McKim, Mead & Bigelow in the Queen Anne style for Anne Coleman Alden with landscaping by Charles Wellford Leavitt & Sons. in 1900, she sold the estate to William John Matheson {industrialist}. Matheson served as chairman of the board of Corn Products Refining Co. and president of Cassella Color Co. and Matheson Lead Co.

Matheson immediately commissioned Boring & Tilton to transform the Queen Anne home into a Tudor Revival one. In 1910, he commissioned J. Clinton Mackenzie to design a garage and gatehouse as well as formal gardens, pergolas, and a fountain with a bronze fish sculpture in collaboration with August Saint-Gaudens. After his death in 1930, the estate was inherited by Willis Delano Wood who commissioned landscaping by Ellen Biddle Shipman and Olmsted for the grounds. The murals in the dining room were executed by Griffith Baily Coale in 1931.

The estate was subsequently purchased by George W. Campbell in 1992 and underwent a restoration from 1993-94 which received the New York State Historic Preservation Award in 1997. The estate is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Both the interior and exterior were used as a filming location for S2E15 of "Royal Pains" as Hank's brother tries to reconcile a relationship and then again for S3E9-10.
