castle ruins, archaeological site, Medieval / Middle Ages
The ruined and largely overgrown site of the Roman and medieval fortress on the Gradišteto (or Asara) hill west of Melnica, which has been tentatively identified as Bersinikia (Versinikia), the site of a Bulgar victory over the Byzantines in 813. The approximate distance from Adrianople and the geographical location next to the road between Adrianople and Diampolis (Jambol) and Kabyle make the identification plausible, but an alternative identification with Malomirovo (formerly Hambarlii) farther to the north has also been proposed.
