This is the eastern Dombunker (one of two built by the Germans). U-boats mounted on the turntable in the center of the complex could be moved, via rails, inside these two buildings for repairs. These bunkers were long and over four stories high with arched roofs making them look somewhat like churches, hence the name "Dom" (German for church/cathedral)bunker. The walls were no less than 1.5 meters thick towards the top which meant they could withstand near misses from aerial bombs and the arched roof was designed to cause a bomb to bounce off it before exploding. Added note: The entire porcess of moving the U-boat from slipway onto the turntable and then into the Dombunkers took usually less than 90 minutes.
