ship wreck, submarine, United States Navy, target (military)
The USS Barbel was the lead ship of the final class of conventionally powered attack subs built by the US Navy and served in the Pacific Fleet from 1959 to 1989.
Following her decommissioning she was sold for scrap, but was rejected by the scrapping company due to large amounts of Asbestos insulation used in her hull. The Navy subsequently used the Barbel as a target ship and sank her at this location in 1,972 fathoms on January 30th, 2001.
