Southgate is a popular "inside the Loop" Houston neighborhood, located near Rice University and the Texas Medical Center. It is bounded on the north by University Blvd., on the east by Main Street, on the south by Holcombe St. and on the west by Greenbriar Dr. Original construction began in the late 1920's in the northern portion of the neighborhood; most homes here are pre-WW2. Land to the south was annexed in the late 1930's. Most homes here were built in the 1950's. The new construction craze going on in West University place has spilled over to Southgate, driving land values higher.
