The Texas Medical Center (TMC) is the largest medical center in the world, with 42+ institutions, including Baylor College of Medicine, The University of Texas Health Science Center, Rice University, MD Anderson Cancer Center, The Methodist Hospital Research Institute/Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and their affiliated institutions.

Among its components are 13 hospitals (including the largest children's and veterans affairs hospitals in the country), two medical schools, two graduate schools of biomedical sciences, four nursing schools, and schools of dentistry, public health, and pharmacy, as well as a hospice facility, a geriatric center, a psychiatric center, a forensic medicine center, and a biotech park.

There are over 150,000 people in the TMC every day, including 65,000 employees and 22,000 students. The combined annual research funding of the TMC institutions is over one billion dollars. The TMC also has close ties with NASA's Johnson Space Center, just a short drive away (Baylor directs NASA's National Space Biomedical Research Institute).

Hermann Park, the Houston Zoo, and most of Houston's 16 museums are within walking distance of the TMC. The Houston MetroRail connects the TMC directly with downtown Houston, including three sports arenas and the theater district (second only to New York Broadway in size).
