Located in central Lithuania, covers area of 944 km². Divided into 9 elderships. Administrative centre is Jonava.
There are many rivers, longest of them are Neris, Šventoji, Širvinta. Largest part of municipality is located in river Neris plateau, north-west part located in Nevėžys flatlands. The highest point of municipality is Kulva Esker range, lowest point is Neris and Šventoji rivers valley. The most forested is souther part of municipality, where are Gaižiūnai Forests.
Municipality has several unusual foreign settlement names such as Switzerland (Šveicarija), London (Londonas), Paris (Paryžius), Venice (Venecija). Since 1930 in Rukla town stands military polygon. The biggest peat factory was built near Jonava.
