Located in southestern part of Lithuania, borders on Belarus. Covers area of 2129,15 km², divided into 23 elderships. Administratve centre is Vilnius, but it has a separate city municipality status. The only city is Nemenčinė.
District is known for multinational demographic population, ethnic poles are majority of settlers. The are many forests, Lavoriškės forest is he largest of it. The longest rivers are Neris, Vilnia, Vokė. Landscape was formed by glacier, it is very different: strip nearby river Neris is a part of Southeastern Flatlands, while eastern part of municipality is quite hilly. The highest point of Lithuania - Aukštojas hill (293,84 metres) is located in Medininkai Highlands. Municipality is rich in culture heritage sites, there are many presered areas. The biggest is Neris and Asveja Regional Parks. Municipality has many settlements, the bigest once are located near capital Vilnius. It is purposed to divide district into smaller municipalities.
