Located in eastern Lithuania, borders on Belarus, covers area of 1692 km². Divided into 14 elderships. Administrative centre is Švenčionys, bigger cities are Švenčionėliai and Pabradė.
Municipality until unification of Lithuania in XIII century was known as Nalšia Land. Part of municipality is preserved by Sirvėta, Asveja, Labanoras Regional Parks and Aukštaitija National Park. More than half territory is forested, the biggest of them is Labanoras Forest. There are lots of lakes and swamps. The longest river is Žeimena, which flows into Neris river. Relief is dominated by Švenčionys flatlands.
