Located in southwestern Lithuania, borders with Russia and Poland, covers area of 1259 km². Divided into 12 eldershps. Administrative centre is Vlkaviškis, smaller cities are Kybartai, Virbalis.
The longest rivers are Šešupė and Širvinta, border with Russia goes by them. Least forested district of Lithuania. Vištytis Regional Park is located in municipality south (soon it might be transformed to Suvalkija National Park), it covers probably the most stunning municipality strip with Lake Vištytis and Vištytis town and hilly surroundings.
