The DUKW is a six-wheel-drive amphibious truck that was designed for transporting goods and troops over land and water and for use approaching and crossing beaches in amphibious attacks. Designed by yacht-builder Sparkman & Stephens and the General Motors Corporation during World War II, over 21,000 DUKW's were built by 1945. After the war, DUKW's saw use in hundreds of roles, and several are still in service today as tour buses/boats.

Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park's DUKW was built at General Motors Cadillac Factory in February 1945 and likely saw service in the closing stages of the European War. After the war, it eventually ended up serving as an icebreaker on the Buffalo River before it was donated to the Naval Park in the 1980's.
