  • Chemical weapons stored in the munitions bunkers were known to have leaked into Honey Lake via the groundwater, killing most game which had access to the water, including migratory birds, fish, and big game like deer, elk, and antelope. The kills were big news and it forced the US Army to clean up its act. Now turned into a wildlife sanctuary and actual information accounting the poisoning of the lake seemingly erased from Google searches, it is unclear just how much toxin remains, and whether fish are safe to eat from the water there. The locals in Susanville and Herlong are not posting about this on their web pages, perhaps hoping to recover their economy or see some development.
  • What fish? Honey Lake occasionally goes dry, and is far too alkaline to support most life. Streams go dry every year, and only drain into this locale, not out.
