The storage bunkers or magazines are spaced far enough apart so that if a full one goes all at once it can not detonate the adjacent ones. An exception happened at the Modderfontein B plant in 1976 during a grass fire in the magazine area. Someone left the doors to at least two bunkers open at the same time and when one blew it triggered the next. A news reporter/photographer in a light plane far over the site got an amazing photo of the mushroom cloud coming up towards him.

  • I read the above story several times....and by saying mushroom cloud...one would be indicating this was a atomic explosion..fairly sure it was not so as the villige and prison plus all the wharehouses and buildings around this site.would be way to close for wmd ordinance...if so I would hate to live there
  • Idjman, a mushroom cloud does not necessarily indicate it was atomic..
