Pohakuloa Training Area

USA / Hawaii / Waikoloa Village /
 training ground, United States Army

The Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) was first used as a Marine Corps artillery base during World War II. The 133,000-acre PTA came under Army control following the war. In April 1955, Oahu-based Soldiers built the Quonset huts that have become the post’s signature building. The airfield was constructed in 1956.

The PTA is located on the island of Hawaii between Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and the Hualalai Volcanic Mountains. It extends up the lower slopes of Maun Kea to approximately 6,800 feet in elevation and to about 9,000 feet on Mauna Loa. The training area is about midway between Hilo, on the east coast and the Army landing site at Kawaihae Harbor. The area is the largest DOD installation in Hawaii.

Comments

  • Actually the area you have marked/bordered here and labeled as Pohakuloa Training Area is incorrect. The area depicted is just the airfield. Pohakuloa Training Area is thousands of acres to the west, south, and east of this airfield.
