Fortress Bornem is one of the 32 fortifications belonging to the 95 Km. long outer defending girdle around Antwerp.
Build in 1906 to prevent that the city can be bombed by cannons with larger firing range.
Construction was not even finished in 1914.
WW I the fortress is spared from German artillery attacks.
During the inter-war years the fortress is rebuild as infantry reinforcement.
1940 the fortress is soon siege by the Germans who use it as a depot.
In the ’60 the fortress is purchased by privet owners who converted it into a fishing paradise.
Through the years the fortress is not maintained and became decade.
Today it is still a fishing paradise and the owners are trying with the help of “vzw fort Bornem” to restore the fortress in time.
