The construction of the sea lock, Wintam started in 1979 and was part of the modernization program of the Sea Canal Brussels-Rupel already started in 1967.
A direct branch was dug into the Scheldt, which allowed ships to avoid the winding route over the Rupel.
The new sluice was also considerably larger than the older lock Wintam the Rupel: while this old lock could handle ships up to 4000 tonnes, the new sea-lock fitted ships up to 10,000 tonnes, more than doubled the capacity.
