Fortress 7, Wilrijk is one of the 17 fortifications belonging to the small defending girdle around Antwerp.
Build in 1859, to be part of the Brialmont girdle to defend Antwerp.
In 1985 it became the ownership of the Ministry of the Flemish Community and the city Antwerp.
It is the most preserved Fortress of all 8 others and declared in 1994 a fully protected monument and nature reserve conservation and preservation.
Various scientific studies are held on the Fortress. For 10 years already, there is a study of the succession of mold on dead wood. Extends a university research into the behavior of carbon and blue tit. There are regularly counts on the presence of water birds, bats and Odonata, even ladybugs are on the count list.
The Fortress is not open to the public, but guided walks are provisioned for individuals or groups an advantage where neighboring schools take use of.
