Fortress Zwijndrecht is one of the 17 fortifications belonging to the small defending girdle around Antwerp.
Build after the war of 1870-1871 along with Fortress Merksem and Zwijndrecht. Modernized in 1907 to hold a garrison of one thousand soldiers.
After WW II the fortresses where adjust to fulfill the role as depots for the Belgium army.
So was this fortress until the ’70 specialized in ammunition inspection/treatment and a ammo depot.
Due to the dumping of thousands of tons ammunitions (phosphor) in the moat by several army’s in both WW's, the fortress is doomed to stay military domain till the end of time.
