cemetery, place with historical importance, archaeological site, historical layer / disappeared object
This is the location of the Black Hope Cemetery, a slave and later a freed-man's potters field on the former McKinney plantation grounds. A simple cemetery without complex decoration, the site fell out of use in the 1930's and was ultimately cleared of any remaining markers when the current housing development was built. In the early 1980's, a local resident of the new community discovered two unmarked grave sites while digging for a swimming pool, and further development of the subdivision was halted. The cemetery remains were never relocated and all burials still exist beneath the Newport subdivision.
