Besides the two fortresses on the Tsarevets and Trapezitsa Hills, the medieval capital spread alongside the shores of the Yantra river. The most representative churches and monasteries existed in this part of the city in the medieval period of Bulgaria: “The Holy 40 Martyrs” and the “Great Lavra”, “The Dormition of the Holy Mother of God”, “St. Demetrius”, “St. George”, “St. Paraskeva”. Residential buildings existed on the foothills of the fortresses, where the numerous citizens of the capital lived. A bridge connected the two shores of the river. Later they called it Vladishki or Bishop’s bridge. It consisted of a massive stone fundament and a wooden superstructure. Strong embrasure towers dominated the bridge and safeguarded the traffic. The basements of the towers hosted special premises for the customs administration. It controlled the payment of custom duties on the commodities brought by numerous Bulgarian and foreign traders into the capital city. In the proximity was the so-called Shishman’s bath. This is the only relatively well-preserved hygiene facility from the epoch of the Second Bulgarian Кingdom, which survived up to nowadays.
