"Steneto" Reserve

Steneto is a reserve with Ordinance No.214 from 05.04.1979 and it is included in UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Program. Year designated – 1977 and after 2017 within the Central Balkan Reserve.
The Steneto Biosphere Reserve is part of the Central Balkan National Park. It is not inhabited and there are no major economic activities taking place. Area: 3578.8 hectares.
Relatively undisturbed associations of 200-year-old beech (Fagus sylvatica) can be found. The area also hosts Haberlea rhodopensis, a species endemic to the Balkans. The fauna is extremely rich in species and includes e.g. brown bear (Ursus arctos), chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca), white scavenger vulture (Neophron percnopterus), griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), common otter (Lutra lutra), red deer (Cervus elaphus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa).
The karst terrain is dotted with numerous caves including Kumanitsa, one of the longest underwater caves in Bulgaria (1 656 meters), and Raychova Dupka (337 meters), the deepest precipice cave in the country.
