The lake is about 220 hectares, in the northeastern state of Brandenburg (northwest of Berlin). The village Wustrau-Altfriesack on its north shore straddles the land to the southern end of the much longer Ruppin lake. Both are traversed by the river Rhine. The nutrient-rich lake, together with the lake Kremmener is one of the last typical shallow lakes of the Upper Rhinluch. Grassland, deciduous forests, nutrient-rich waters, large areas of siltation, fens, and swamps characterize this sanctuary. Reed beds and wetlands provide habitat for numerous bird species. In addition, it is an important migration resting area for thousands of northern geese.
