The Shearith Israel Congregation is the oldest in the United States dating to 1655. It was founded by Jewish settlers from Spain and Portugal. This was the third cemetery used by the congregation. The cemetery was used from 1829 to 1851 at which time New York passed law forbidding burial in Manhattan.
