Nokrek Biosphere Reserve

Nokrek has been designated a Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations due to its unspoilt natural habitat for wildlife. The place is famous for 'Memang Narang', the original and the parent of all citrus fruits. Hoolock Gibbon which has a close resemblance to Homosapiens resides in the hills. It only one of the eight biosphere reserves in India.

Wildlife enthusiast can visit this park on special permission, and can enjoy tradition, primitive and local lifestyle at 'A.chik House' at Daribokgre, on the fringe of the park.

Nokrek, a biological hotspot in Meghalaya, also features undisturbed natural ecosystems and landscapes. Besides harbouring elephants, tigers, leopards and hollock gibbons, the area is also noted for its wild varieties of citrus fruit which may come to serve as a genepool for commercially produced citrus.

  • There are seven species of primates in Nokrek. The rare Stump-tailed macaque is frequently seen near the main trek to the peak. The Pig-tailed macaque also occurs. Hoolocks are common and their calls could be heard all over Nokrek. Nokrek is also an Important Bird Area.
