Located in the Barpeta & Kokrajhar districts of Assam at the Himalayan foothills bordering Bhutan with an area of 950 sq. km, the park is named after the River Manas that passes through it. It is 41 kms away from Barpeta Road town in Assam.
Originally a sanctuary from as early as 1928, the first Project Tiger reserve of Assam was created here in 1973. It was declared a biosphere reserve in 1989 and finally was given the status of a National Park in 1990.
It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1985 as it is the home for some 20 endangered and 33 threatened species of wildlife. This is the largest number of endangered & threatened species in any protected area of India. Notable endangered species being the Assam Roofed Turtle, Golden Langur, Hispid Hare, Pygmy Hog, White-winged Wood Duck, Bengal Florican etc.
Manas has plenty of variety in its wildlife that includes 55 species of mammals including the one-horned Rhino, Tiger and Asiatic Wild Buffalo. Manas is also an important bird park as it the home of some 350 species of birds. Besides 22 reptiles, 3 amphibians, 78 types of butterflies and 43 insects can be found here.
Best time to visit is between November and March.
