Kaziranga<Kazirranga a Karbi word i.e., a village belongs to one Karbi Lady 'Kazir'. According to Tai-Ahom scholars the word 'Kaziranga' means a place or home of various horn animals such as: Rhino, elephant, bufallo, deer etc. The word is interpreted as -Ka= animal, zi = a store or home, ranga = horned animals.

Kaziranga was a part of ancient -Dharmaranya, Champakaranya, Kusharanya, Koshakaranbhumi, Swarga, Amaravati, Sangjamani, Koilash, Girivraja, Girivarta, Girikachala, Kiratadehsa, Kinnaradesha, Prajya, Prassi, Seres, Kadali, Kopili, Pagarjotic, Khamru, Kamrupa, Swarnapitha etc.

The old name of Kaziranga was 'Jatiarong @ Jatyarong. Most of the old Tai-Ahom Buranjis it is reflected as 'Jatyarong.'

This region was a hunting and fishing place of the Tai-Ahom kings particularly in the days of Siuchengpha @ Pratapsimha. Jatyarong there stood a 'Bahar' means Rest House of the Ahom kings. The famous Cheuni Ali, a medieval high way, touches Kaziranga.

Kaziranga was the medieval trade centre between the Tai-Ahom, Dimacha, and the Karbi people along with Roha, Dharamtul, Jagi etc.

Kaziranga stands today a National Wild Life Park and World famous for housing natural one horn Rhino. Today, its numeral is 2000 approximatly. Kaziranga is a famous Tourist spot.

Kazi & Ranga(lifted from Kolkattabirds.com as the same sounds more romantic)

There is an interesting story about how the name Kaziranga came about: a young man Kazi from Karbi Anglong fell in love with Ranga, a village belle from the Assam plains. The parents would not approve of their courtship, so they could only fleetingly meet in the forest. The forest became their favorite abode. One day both of them suddenly disappeared never to return, much to the anguish of their respective parents. The forest was thereafter named Kaziranga in the memory of the young lovers.
