La Conner's Rainbow Bridge connects La Conner to Fidalgo Island, which includes the gated Shelter Bay Community, the Swinomish reservation, and the city of Anacortes. Built in the mid-1950s, it has become an icon of the area. Both the bridge and the town of La Conner itself are registered National Landmarks.
When the bridge opened in 1957, residents liked its international red primer coat so much that they insisted on a topcoat of the same color. After much wrangling and finger shaking at state officials, the arching steel span that's come to be known as the Rainbow Bridge became the only orange bridge in a state full of green bridges.
