Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge & Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge, The I-90 Floating Bridge

USA / Washington / Mercer Island /

Also known as the Lacey V. Murrow Bridge. Built of interconnected concrete pontoons that float on the lake. Anchored to the bottom of the lake for lateral stability. Connects Mercer Island to Seattle. Has a reversible lane to support traffic flows during rush hours.

The original bridge (the southerly of the two) sunk shortly after the construction of the larger northerly bridge, while it was being upgraded in connection with completing I-90 across Mercer Island and through Seattle to I-5. The sunken sections were subsequently replaced.

Comments

  • The one-way center span runs E->W in the morning, and W->E in the afternoon/evening. Awesome views of Mt. Rainier from the first 1/3 of the span when heading East.
  • This bridge has the only bike/pedestrian route across Lake Washington. Part of the Sound-To-Mountians trail system.
