Rather than a single installation, is composed of three geographically separate facilities located on the northern third of Whidbey Island.
It was commissioned as an active U.S. Navy installation on Sept. 21, 1942. A year later, on Sept. 25, 1943, the airfield was named Ault Field, in memory of Commander William B. Ault, missing in action in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Today the Air Station is home to 19 active duty squadrons, 2 reserve squadrons and numerous tenant commands.
