August L. Janssen Residence (Plandome Manor, New York)

USA / New York / Plandome / Plandome Manor, New York
residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, Mediterranean Revival (architecture)

In 1910 August Janssen {restauranteur, developer} bought 36 acres surrounding the new railroad site from Leeds’ holdings and built his large stucco home c.1913 by Joseph Schaeffler, 17+rooms with intricate woodwork, stained glass doors, and large marble fireplaces, with apartment over 3-car garage. Janssen was the proprietor of the popular Janssen’s Hofbrau Haus on 30th Street/Broadway in New York City, and owned a number of real estate development companies. He was also a member of the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club.

In 1915 he sold the parcel just east of the railroad line to architect Richard R. Thompson, and new homes began to be built in what was called Plandome Estates. One southern-style colonial on Colonial Drive was sold by Janssen in 1922, but the main portion of the house was over 100 years old, the first home in the area. Janssen Drive was named in his honor. The home was later owned by Andrew A. Nelson in the 1950's.
