The Shumen fortress (Bulgarian: Шуменска крепост, Shumenska krepost) is an archaeological site overlooking the city of Shumen in north-eastern Bulgaria.
More than a simple citadel, its first walls were erected as early as the Iron Age (c. 8th century BC) and expanded under the Thracians and the Romans to house a whole community. Utilised by the Byzantines, it became a Bulgarian stronghold during the Second Empire, forming a pivotal cog in the country's protective shield. There's a model in the History Museum showing how the fort looked at its zenith. When Ottoman forces finally breached the walls the fortress's mighty defences were systematically neutralised, and later the stone was taken for other buildings in the town. Today the remains are an evocative place to explore, especially for lovers of castles and citadels. A maze of stout square buildings indicates where homes, shops and storerooms once stood.
