  • 5th Marines are at San Mateo
  • In 1966 I was at Horno which was then part of the Infantry Training Regiment and 2nd Bn 2nd ITR at San Onofre. 5th MarDiv was down at Mainside during Vietnam. The 27th Marines were at Camp Margarita along with Marine Observation Squadron Six billeting. Camp Las Pulgas was the 14th Marines (?) Artillery Regiment. Camp San Mateo was Advanced School or Infantry. Las Flores was tanks. Del Mar was amtracs. Staging Battalion was up behind Mainside. Last time I was at Pendleton was 1992 just before I retired.
  • Camp Horno is the 1st Marines. 5th and CEB are up at San Mateo, 11th are down at Las Pulgas. Flores is LAR and Force, Del Mar is tracks and MEF, and Margarita is Division and Battalion Recon. (As of 2005)
  • Correct. Horno is 1st Marines. In the late 80's the 7th moved out to 29 stumps from Mateo while the 5th moved into Mateo. I transferred to 2/5 and went back to Mateo and later went to the 1st at Horno. Arty has almost always been at Pulgas from what I know since it's close to the range and Del Mar has always been tracs being close to the water. Drove through last year and it doesn't look like much has changed! How many of you remember Mount MF'er at Onofre? :)
  • MF at Onofre.... oh yeah !! and "Spider Man", on our 'route step' forced marches....to training. And from there to Nelly's Nipple at Horno. Spent some time looking up at Nelly's from the Horno mess-hall grinder.. and more time running the fire breaks. What a time - what memories....
  • I was at Horno in August 1966 with 2nd ITR company G. We had to watch out for the Recon's up on the water pipes at night. Semper Fi
  • While at Horno I hope you all enjoyed the Vietnamese village with all the spyder hole and traps(nonlethal) we lovingly left for you. We all hoped your time was productive. I especially enjoyed sitting on the hill"observing" the new marines from ITR up the road. We were there in our "Gilleys" helping you to try to learn how to spot what was really there all the time. We spent alot of energry to help as best we could. To all those who were there, Semper Fi, and happy Birthday Marine. Can you remember the first time a Marine called you that? I can and do. Your time at our home, compliments of Force Recon MCV/SOG35 WW Austin Marine, for life

  • Yo, Charlie! I was in the 1st Anti-Tank Battalion (ONTOS = The Thing) at Camp Horno 1959-60. Could never figure out why it was called Camp Horno, until my wife left me a Spanish vocabulary note. Seems that "horn" is Spanish for "oven." Makes sense to me ! Semper Fi, Charlie Mason.
  • Camp Horno was the home of the elite Marine Corps Test Unit #1 until 1957 when it was disbanded. The mock up flattop (the USS Neversail) up the hill was used to train us to jump in and out of choppers. Good memories.
  • Came to Horno from 1st Tank Batt. when 1st Anti Tanks was formed 1957. Was Tracked Vehicle Repairman assigned to Ontoes M50 Tracked dempstey Dumpsters
  • Camp was brand new, when the 1st Division returned from Korea, in 1955. I was in B-1-1-1. We (B Co.) were housed in the 2nd building from the South end of the camp, about a block West of Basilone Road. Lots of good memories of Pendleton, and San Clemente! Bob Crawford, Indianapolis
  • I was in ITR at Camp Horno around Oct/Nov '65. It was muddy and while waiting to follow some Marines who sloshed horribly in the mud and lost their balance falling all over the place, a few of us waiting for our turn smiled and guffawed. However, our instructor, Corporal Keller, was pissed and chewed our ass out. So I was assigned to "cook school" which I immediately protested and was sent to 7th Motor Transport Battalion instead. Maybe Corporal Keller did me a favor, as I would have been happy to go with the grunts to Vietnam. I made it through a year in 'Nam and got out to eventually become an emergency physician.
  • 1/1 Bravo Co, Weapons Platoon - Camp Horno - 1981 to 1983!
  • Completed ITR in 1955, part of the training was to jump into a muddy trench and wait for the tanks to rumble over us, individually, of course. An earlier post mentioned a Cpl. Keller: he was my DI at MCRD in 1954 and had just returned from Korea. Wasn't very tall but was all Marine. S/F S.Wyatt

  • I was transferred from F-2-11 in November, 1957 to the recently established 7th Communications Bn at Horno. After a short period of training, we deployed to the Philipines for a 3 mo MARLEX (Marine landing exercise). We returned to the states in March, 1958. Prior to the transfer, I was part of the 1st Mar Div move from Korea in 1955, arriving in San Diego in late March or early April for assignment to 16 area at Camp Pendleton. My name is Sgt Theotrice Gamble Jr, Some names I remember are Howard "Bud" Fry (still in contact), Clyde Elrod, Manuel Garcia. Are any of our platoon still around?
  • Left Wpns Plt B 1/1 in 1981. Mike Wagner
  • At Horno, B 1/1 Wpns Plt from 1977-1981. Co Cmdr's Capt. Zebal-Capt. Robnick-Capt. R.B. Blose. Jr.(who reminded us that "our business is killing people," and business was bad but would pick up "so be ready.") Plt Sgt was S/Sgt Olko (tunnel rat in Vietnam), Plt. Cmdr Lt. Kerrigan. Ran up Recon too many times to count, dug a million fox holes, patrolled Horno canyon each week, humped to and from Casey Springs, trained at Bridgeport, 29 palms, Coronado, pump on the rock, 1980. Field day the squad bay every Thursday night, fire watch most every night, stood tall on the grinder every morning, and prayed for a 96 or 72 when coming back from the field! Damn, I miss those day's.

  • Worked in the Camp Horno Disbursing Office September 1973 to November 1974, enjoyed going out to San Clemente on paydays and having a New York Strip steak for dinner. The 21 year old drinking age sucked, but the commanding general of Camp Pendleton stated that if his marines were old enough to fight then they are old enough to drink, spent many nights at the Camp Horno E-club.
