Never used for aviation and built during WWII, SAAAB was one of three national basic training facilities for Army Air Corps soldiers including mechanics, pilots, bombadiers, and navigators. The other two training facilities were located at Maxwell Field in Montgomery, AL and Moffett Field in Sunnyvale, CA. The base was dedicated in March 1942 and decommissioned on 31 March 1946. After the base's closure, some of the buildings were adaptively reused by the college and fairgrounds now occupying the site.
