The 17½ mile stretch of shoreline along the base's coast is the largest undeveloped portion of coastal area left in Southern California.

Small Marine tanks are used in training including landing exercises. Heavy rubber pads are used on the treads for when tanks must cross paved roads. Many civilian bicyclists crossing the Base on the permitted route stop for a photo op at the one --Tank Crossing-- sign.

  • Baring National Emergencies bicyclists who can provide adequate identification are allowed the ride across the base between the Las Pulgas gate and the Oceanside gate. A high point of the ride is to pose with your bike at the Tank Crossing sign If the base is closed cyclists are free to use the shoulder of the Interstate I-5. Actually they are free to use the Las Pulgas to oceanside section of O-5 at any time. it is an easier route.
  • Basically, anyone with ID can get on the base. The public bus routes pass through the base. The common method of transport for MCT.
