Los Alamitos JFTB houses units of various branches of the military but primarily serves as an Army airfield and houses the headquarters to both the 40th ID (CA ANG) and 63rd RRC (USAR).
Los Alamitos Army Airfield (LAAAF) is an instrumented, military airfield (KSLI) operated by the California Army National Guard (CA-ARNG) on the 1400 acre Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB) at Los Alamitos.
Los Alamitos Army Airfield is a former Naval Air Station.
The site for the original Naval Air Station (NAS) was purchased in 1940 and NAS Los Alamitos opened in May 1942. Los Alamitos was used extensively for aviation training by the Navy in World War II and provided alert aircraft to patrol and defend the California Coast. After the war, the Naval Air Station supported Naval Reserve Aviation activities, and during the 1950's and 60's, NAS Los Alamitos was the largest Naval Air Reserve installation on the West Coast.
Additionally, Los Alamitos supported mobilizations for Korea and Vietnam.
The Navy transferred Los Alamitos in 1973 to the Army, which started operating the airfield soon after. The airfield at Los Alamitos has two all weather runways, with lengths of 8000 ft and 6000 ft.
Los Alamitos can accommodate nearly every aircraft in the DoD inventory and the airfield often lands C-5, C-17, C-141, C-130, KC-135, DoD charter airlift, NASA missions, fighter aircraft and has hosted the Commander-in-Chief's, Boeing 747, Air Force One on numerous occasions along with the USMC Presidential Helicopter Flight Detachment (HMX-1). Ramp space can accommodate up to ten parked C-5 Galaxy's without difficulty.
Los Al is the largest Army Airfield operated by the National Guard Bureau (NGB) and is the last remaining military airport remaining in the greater Orange/L.A. County areas.
Presently, some 30 helicopters of the 40th Aviation Brigade are assigned to the Los Alamitos Army Aviation Support Facility.
These include OH-58C Kiowa, UH-1H Hueys, and UH-60A Blackhawks. Several United States Army Reserve C-12 airplanes are also assigned and the USDA/CDFA operates about a half dozen aircraft that support the Medfly/ Mexfly Mediterranean Fruit Fly eradication program.
The airfield includes a fully staffed Army Air Traffic Control Tower, crash rescue/fire department, 200,000 gallon aviation refueling system and a Weather Office.
Additionally, the airfield operates a full motion UH-1 Flight Simulator (2B24SFTS).
