"crocodile reserve" to reduce people-crocodile conflicts.
The government plans to spend Rs.23.6 million on a chain of ponds in Kotmi Sonar village in Janjgir district where hundreds of crocodiles have been attacking unsuspecting villagers for years.
In recent months alone, dozens of villagers, mostly women, have been injured while washing clothes and utensils.
Earlier the crocodiles were few in number but their population has expanded rapidly. They have spread terror.
The crocodiles wait for humans. They snatch women and pull them deep into the ponds and attack them in packs. We have decided to wire fence the ponds and keep villagers and crocodiles in two different territories.
At the same time, the government will spend money on nurturing and helping the crocodiles to grow in numbers.
It also plans to make the ponds a perfect site where tourists can see how humans and crocodiles enjoy co-existence.
Eventually, the village ponds will become "one of the major crocodile reserves" in the country.
Almost 40 percent of the amount released under crocodile reserves is to be spent on widening and deepening the ponds and also on stretching the width of their banks.
Work has begun to pour huge quantity of fish as daily food for crocodiles.
