Kanpur (spelled as "Cawnpore" before 1948), is the ninth most populous city in India and the largest within the state of Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur is economic and industrial capital of Uttar Pradesh. It is the second largest city of the Hindi speaking belt after Delhi. It has an area of over 829 square km and a population over 5 million, which is estimated to grow up to 6 million by 2011. Kanpur has a urban periphery of around 90 Km on which a 110 km Ring Road is also proposed.
Kanpur is one of the oldest industrial townships of North India. With the GDP of 20 billion $ it stands in Top 10 cities of India. The city falls in the category of "Counter Magnets" of National Capital Region (NCR). The city has been declared as "BOOMTOWN" and also entitled with the town with Export excellence.
Kanpur is the largest city of the state U.P. It is also known as economic capital of state. Kanpur is the highest tax payer city of Uttar Pradesh. The first multiplex of north india opened in Kanpur named RAVE 3. Kanpur's GDP is highest in U.P. and second highest after Delhi in North India.
Owing to the city's industrial importance, one of the few branches of the Reserve Banks of India and Institute of Chartered Accountants of India(ICAI)were established in the city. It is also home to several globally recognized institutions such as IIT Kanpur, Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) and GSVM Medical College.
Two main rivers flow in the City, the Ganges in the north-east and the Yamuna in the south. The four districts that surround Kanpur are Fatherpur in the East, Hamirpur in the South,RamaBai Nagar in the West and Unnao in the North. The city is well connected with other major cities of Uttar Pradesh viz., Agra, Allahabad,Jhansi,Lucknow, Varanasi etc.
The city is also known as the biggest education hub of india. Top class engineering colleges and coaching are present in the city. Kanpur is also one of the largest coaching hub of India with thousands of students came from all over India.
Now the CITY is being developed as a metro city like Delhi and Mumbai after enlisting in Counter Magnet City. But still needs support from local authorities and specially from state goverment.C urrenty under JNNURM several works are undergoing which are expecting to be over in 2011. New flyovers,huge malls and it's business is giving Kanpur a new dimension.
Kanpur is a very important due to it's industrial and educational importace.
Arround 1 lack visitors came here yearly from all over the world.
Bithoor is the most important tourist destination for visitors in Kanpur.
Also J.K. Temple,NanaRao Park,Kanpur Zoo and lot of other locations are famous.
The face of the Kanpur City will be totally changed within 4 to 5 years since many development projects are in the way to produce great amount of Jobs in Kanpur.
e.g. Two Huge power plants are under process which will produce around 15000 jobs.
One Mega Logistics Park will be established soon near Panki Which will be unique in North India and produce thousands of Jobs .

Also the Dedicated Freight Corridor (Eastern) and NHDP (Highway Project) will pass through Kanpur which will make Kanpur more Strong on Transport Basis.
