Gorakhpur is a city in the eastern part of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, near the border with Nepal. It is the administrative headquarters of Gorakhpur District and Gorakhpur Division. Gorakhpur is famous as a religious centre. The city was home to Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Jain and Sikh saints and is named after the medieval saint Gorakshanath of Nath Sampraday/sect. Gorakhnath Temple is still the seat of the Nath sect. It is also the Birth place of the great saint Paramhansa Yogananda. The city is also home to many historic Buddhist sites,Imambara[1]-a 18th century dargah and the Gita Press, a publisher of Hindu religious texts,

In the 20th century, Gorakhpur was a focal point in the Indian independence movement. Today, the city is also a business centre, hosting the headquarters of the North Eastern Railways, previously known as Bengal Nagpur Railways, and an industrial area, GIDA (Gorakhpur Development Authority) 15 km from the old town.

  • I am also born in gorakhpur but now brought up in kirirbati.Regret to say that the drainage system is so bad that mosquitos rule this place.Something has to be done to this part of india otherwise tourists will avoid going to kushinagr also.I travel almost every year from here but not much changes on *MY JANAM BHUMI*

  • Gorakhpur is a commercial hub in eastern Uttar Pradesh and is one of the largest cities in the state. Perched at an altitude of 102 m above sea level, the city is in the shape of a bowl. Gorakhpur is the seat of administration of Gorakhpur District and is located on the banks of the Rapti River. Lucknow is 245 km west of Gorakhpur. Founded in 1400, the city derived its name from the Hindu saint Gorakhnath, who was an eminent profounder saint of 'Nath Sampradaya'. During the reign of Akbar, it was a district headquarters and an important garrison town. The city was ceded to the East India Company by the Nawab of Avadh in 1801. Under the British, the city was made the headquarters of a division bearing the same name and it remained with them until India’s independence in 1947. Gorakhpur is now a prominent industrial and agricultural trade center in Uttar Pradesh. Textiles, printing, sugar milling and railroad maintenance and manufacturing constitute the major industries. The city is also famous for its terracotta and handloom. Shopping facilities are available at Urdu Bazaar, Saheb Ganj, Alinagar and Ghantaghar, which are the main business centers. Places of tourist interest include Gorakhnath temple (4 km), Geeta Vatika, Vishnu Temple, Ramgarh Tal, Arogya Mandir and the 18th century Imambara. Chauri Chaura (25 km), Maghar (27 km), Kapilvastu and Kushinagar (51 km) constitute entertaining excursions. Gorakhpur Junction Railway Station is the zonal headquarters of North Eastern Railways. Varanasi Airport (210 km) and Amausi Airport at Lucknow are the nearest airports. The National Highway 29 passes through Gorakhpur and connects Varanasi, Faizabad and Ayodhya.
  • I was born in gorakhpur in 1976 but educated in Australia.Now the last place i want to visist is gorakhpur.Gorakhpur has maximum mosquitos throughout the years and beside the water is so dirty that if you were to heat it ,they turn into rusty water.Nothing much has been done to improve this city.I do agree with the above Mr.Lanth Ram Gupta who has commented about the drainage system .
