The castle was built on the righ bank of Berounka river by Ulrich Tista of Hedcany (later of Liebstein), master-builder of Emperor Charles IV, who errected severe castles to him, e.g. the Karlsfried Castle in neighbourhood of Zittau, Saxony. The Libstejn served to Ulrich as his private seat. During the Hussite Wars in 1425 was the castle destroyed and till 1590 was mentioned as empty and wasted.
