The early medieval Cistercian monastery was founded by Czech Prince Vladislav II. in the valley of the Strela river in 1144. It was destroyed by a Hussite´s army in the 15th century and reconstructed in 1661 - 1740. The monastery was rebuilt by plans of famous architects Jean Baptiste Mathey, Giovanni Blasio Santini-Aichel and Kilian Ignac Dientzenhoffer upon the muddy floodplain ground onto more of 5 000 oaken wood piles. In 1785 was the monastery disestablished by Emperor of Austria Joseph II. In 1826 the monastery manor was bought by Austrian chancellor Prince Clemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich-Winneburg, who had adapted former abbey as a castle, and his family tomb was constituted in Empire style reconstructed St. Wenceslas Church. Last major reconstructions were made in 1894 after the devastating large fire. Since 1945 has been the castle in property of Czech state. Former abbey is accessible during summer months and concerts and exhibitions has been performed here.
