The village is located on the right bank of the river Verkhnja Tersa (Upper Ters), which got its name. The river name, in turn, produces from the Turkic word "Ters" - the opposite, reverse. It is believed that the river Ters so named because it is the first of the rivers on the way from the Crimea to the outskirts of Russia which is flowing not to the south but to the north.
