St. Francisville toll bridge - Old Wabash Cannonball railroad bridge

USA / Illinois / Saint Francisville /
 interesting place, bridge

Originally constructed by the King Bridge Company in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1897, then bought by the railroad, dismantled, and moved to its present site in 1906 to serve as a railroad bridge over the Wabash River between Indiana and Illinois where it carried the famous Wabash Cannon Ball train. Its center span was a swing bridge. When the railroad abandoned the line, the bridge was purchased by a Vincennes, Indiana farmer to haul his produce.

This one lane converted railroad bridge is open for automobile travel. The ties are planked with 2 inch running boards and rattle as you drive across. Follow signs off Illinois Hwy #1 from the west or take the 6th Street Road southwest out of Vincennes. Toll booth is a wooden minibarn on the west end of the bridge approach.

  • I remember this bridge, and the day I got duped by my loyal GPS. I took a loaded tractor trailer reefer unit, 18 wheeler, 80 feet in length across this bridge. Definitely an e-ride, not much fun.
  • Well if the bridge was built for old locomotives, Im certain that an 18 wheeler should not have any problems crossing the bridge.
