Wabash County was formed in 1824 out of Edwards County, after an armed confrontation between the militias of Albion and Mt. Carmel after the county seat was moved from a town near the current city of Mount Carmel to Albion. With 8,866 people, Mount Carmel itself accounts for roughly 70% of Wabash County's population. Nearly 85% of the county's population lives either in or within 2 miles of the city.

The first and more powerful of the two earthquakes that occurred on April 18, 2008 at 4:37am was in Lick Prairie township located in the northwestern part of the county, the other was in northern Edwards county at 10:14am.
