Sacred Heart of Jesus School

USA / New Jersey / West New York / West 52nd Street, 456

4-story school originally completed in 1896. The school was first staffed by The Sisters of Charity of New York. In 1952, the school had an enrollment of 1200 students, pre-dominantly of Irish-American heritage. The enrollment declined in the 1960s, and the boys department and the girls departments were merged. Today, Sacred Heart of Jesus houses approximately 260 students in grades PK3 to 8th grade.

The facade, clad in red brick, was renovated in 1989. It spans a total of eight bays, with two sets of double-windows in each of the middle bays, and one set in the narrower end bays. There are entrances at both end bays, with red metal double-doors below round-arches; the western door is situated atop a low set of steps. A black iron fence fronts the middle section of the facade, behind which is a raised basement floor a little bit below sidewalk level. The piers project between each bay. The windows are framed in black metal, with limestone sills joining the two windows in each bay, and similar limestone lintels with moldings. There is a corbelled brick parapet at the roof line, with the caps of the piers projecting up above, and the end bays have round-arches above the windows.
