Interstate 95 (I-95) is a north-south mainline interstate route from Miami, Florida to the Canadian border near Houlton, Maine. It enters Virginia from North Carolina south of Emporia, Virginia. It enters Maryland near Alexandria, Virginia after brushing the D.C. border. I-95 passes through Petersburg, Richmond, Fredericksburg, Springfield, and Alexandria. Through downtown Richmond, I-95 runs concurrently with I-64 for 4 miles. I-95 parallels U.S. Highway 301 from North Carolina through Petersburg and Richmond. It also parallels U.S. Highway 1 from Petersburg, through Richmond, to Washington, D.C. I-95 is one of the busiest roads on the east coast, connecting to major northeastern cities such as New York and Boston. The road is notoriously congested in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, where HOT lanes (HOV or pay a toll) have been recently constructed for a more reliable trip.
