The lake was formed by damming the valley stream and opened for use in 1975. The lake was named for Paul W. Litchfield. Mr. Litchfield was a President and CEO of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (President: 1926-1940, CEO: 1930-1956) and was instrumental in the developing the original Camp Manatoc and the second camp which opened in 1932.
